About Emmaus Road Ministries

Emmaus Road Ministries exists to help Christians grow into a mature, whole-life faith that shapes the way they understand the world and live within it.

Through teaching, writing, leadership development, radio, and other resources, ERM seeks to help believers connect biblical truth with the realities of everyday life.

About David Becker

David Becker has served in Christian ministry in Africa for more than three decades, first in Kenya and later in Zambia. His work has included leadership development, teaching, discipleship, radio ministry, and writing, with a consistent emphasis on helping Christians connect biblical truth with the whole of life.

He holds a PhD in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, where his research focused on leadership and culture among the Bemba people of Zambia. That work has continued to shape his teaching and writing on leadership, worldview, and Christian formation.

Today, David continues to teach, write, and produce resources through Emmaus Road Ministries. He also co-hosts the weekly radio program Battle for the Christian Mind on Radio Christian Voice in Lusaka. His current work includes books and video resources aimed at helping believers grow into a more mature, thoughtful, and undivided Christian faith.

Our Ministry Focus

Emmaus Road Ministries is committed to helping Christians develop a faith that is biblically grounded, intellectually serious, and lived out in everyday life.

Our work currently centers on three areas:

Biblical Worldview and Discipleship

Helping believers learn to see the world through the biblical story and to connect Christian faith with the whole of life.

Leadership Development

Encouraging thoughtful, culturally aware, and biblically faithful approaches to leadership in the church and wider society.

Teaching, Writing, and Media

Developing books, radio programs, video resources, and other materials that equip Christians to think carefully, live faithfully, and engage the world around them.

A Ministry Shaped by Africa

When David Becker arrived in Kenya in 1990, he came with years of preparation already behind him. Academic education, vocational work, ministry training, and a wide range of life experiences had given him many skills and ways of thinking. Yet almost immediately, he discovered that effective ministry would require more than simply reproducing what he had learned elsewhere.

Again and again, God placed David, with his wife Beth alongside him, in situations where some part of that preparation proved useful, but rarely in exactly the form in which it had been learned. The context required listening, adaptation, creativity, and a willingness to let previous experience grow into something new. What had been learned in one setting had to be reconsidered in light of the people, culture, needs, and opportunities of another.

Beth shared those formative years of ministry with David in both Kenya and Zambia until her death in 2013. In 2016, David married Annie, a Zambian from the Bemba people, who became both his wife and a partner in ministry until her death in 2022. Through these years of life, relationships, and ministry in Kenya and Zambia, David's understanding of culture and contextualization was profoundly shaped.

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Scripture remained the foundation, but the realities of life in Africa continually pressed him to ask how biblical truth could be understood and lived faithfully within particular cultural worlds rather than merely imported in familiar Western forms.

Underlying that process was a simple concern: to be effective. David never wanted merely to occupy the role of missionary or continue a ministry simply because it was expected. If his presence was not useful, he was willing to do something else. That conviction created an ongoing willingness to listen, learn, change, and follow where God was leading.

Emmaus Road Ministries grew out of that process. Its work today continues to reflect the same conviction that faithful Christian ministry must be rooted in Scripture, attentive to context, dependent upon the Holy Spirit, and willing to keep learning in order to serve people well.

David and Stella

David and his wife, Stella, live in Lusaka, Zambia, where he continues the work of Emmaus Road Ministries through teaching, writing, leadership development, and media.

Rooted in Scripture
Biblical truth provides the foundation for the ministry and the framework through which life, culture, and Christian discipleship are understood.

What Guides Our Work

Dependent on the Holy Spirit
We believe faithful ministry requires more than good ideas and careful planning. We seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in understanding people, circumstances, and the work God is doing.

Attentive to Context
People live within particular cultures, histories, relationships, and ways of understanding the world. Effective ministry listens carefully and seeks to redeem the what is lost.

Faith for the Whole of Life
Christian faith is not confined to church activity. It should shape how believers think, work, lead, relate to others, make decisions, and engage the world around them.

Where the Ministry Is Going

Today, Emmaus Road Ministries continues to build on these years of learning through writing, teaching, radio, video, and leadership development.

Much of the current work focuses on helping Christians develop a more mature biblical worldview, understand faith as a way of seeing and living within God’s reality, and connect Christian discipleship with the whole of life.

ERM also continues to explore questions of leadership, culture, and Christian formation, particularly within the African context. The goal remains the same: to develop resources and conversations that help believers think carefully, live faithfully, and serve effectively.
